Colorado law
In Colorado, CO alarms aren't optional. They're statute.
Since 2009, the Lofgren & Johnson Memorial Carbon Monoxide Safety Act has required working carbon monoxide alarms within 15 feet of every bedroom in Colorado homes that are sold, transferred, rented — or remodeled under permit.

My name is Jayson Sale. I started as a professional firefighter in 1999 and spent 25+ years in the fire service here in the Denver Metro area — firefighter and paramedic, now retired. In that time I've seen both sides of the same story: the homes where a working detector woke everyone in time — and the tragedies where a missing battery or a worn-out unit meant it never sounded at all.

Facts worth knowing
Straight answers, fire-service sourced.
- Can I just take the battery out when it chirps?
- That chirp is the detector asking for help. In fires where a smoke alarm was present but never sounded, more than two in five alarms had missing or disconnected batteries — and dead batteries caused another quarter of the failures. Silencing it by unplugging it is how those numbers happen.
- How many detectors should my home have?
- One in every bedroom, one outside each sleeping area, and one on every level of the home — basement included. The NFPA also recommends they be interconnected: when one sounds, they all sound.
- Why does “interconnected” matter so much?
- Smoke — not flame — is what kills most people in home fires, and most fatal fires happen at night. If a fire starts in the basement while you sleep two floors up, the alarm by your bed is the one that wakes you in time.
- How often should detectors be tested?
- The NFPA says test monthly, change batteries when you change your clocks, and replace the whole unit at the end of its life — 10 years for smoke, about 7 for carbon monoxide. Our basic visit covers all of it in one stop.
- Where should CO alarms be mounted?
- Near sleeping areas — Colorado's own statute uses 15 feet from every bedroom door as the rule for covered homes — and on every level. CO is invisible and odorless; the alarm is the only warning you get.
