The ten-year rule
NFPA and CPSC guidance says smoke alarms should be replaced when they are ten years old. Check the date on the back of each unit rather than estimating from when you moved in. If you cannot establish the age, inspection is the safe next step.
Published replacement price
The published price is $65 per hardwired smoke detector. It includes the First Alert SM105-AC specified by Detector Inspectors, parts and labor. That model is hardwired, interconnect capable and uses a 10-year sealed backup battery.
