The Colorado sleeping-area rule
For covered single-family and multi-family dwellings, Colorado law requires an operational CO alarm within 15 feet of each room lawfully used for sleeping, unless an adopted building code specifies another location.
Every-level guidance
CPSC recommends CO alarms on each level and outside sleeping areas. Exact mounting height and distance from fuel-burning equipment should follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
Which homes are covered by the statute
The Colorado requirements apply in specified sale, transfer, rental and permitted-work situations involving homes with fuel-fired appliances, fireplaces or attached garages. Local code may add or clarify requirements.
Emergency rule
If a CO alarm sounds, move outside to fresh air and call 911. Do not search the house for the source or assume the alarm is defective.
