Sale or transfer of a home
For an existing covered dwelling offered for sale or transfer, the seller must assure that an operational CO alarm is installed within 15 feet of the entrance to each lawful sleeping room, or in the location required by an adopted code.
Rental and multi-family provisions
The statute contains separate provisions for single-family rentals and multi-family dwelling units, including duties related to installation and tenant notification. Owners and tenants should read the current statute and any local code that applies to the property.
Permitted work can trigger requirements
The law also addresses covered homes where permitted interior alterations, repairs, fuel-fired appliance replacements, additions or new sleeping rooms are involved.
Maintenance does not become optional
The statute prohibits rendering a CO alarm inoperable except as part of inspection, maintenance, repair, replacement or battery replacement. If you need a property-specific legal conclusion, consult the current code or a qualified local professional.
