Cover bedrooms and sleeping areas
NFPA and CPSC guidance calls for smoke alarms inside every bedroom and outside each separate sleeping area. Closed doors and distance make the alarm near the person sleeping especially important.
Cover every level
Install alarms on every level, including the basement. Large homes, separated wings and unusual layouts may need additional alarms.
Choose exact locations carefully
Smoke alarms generally belong on the ceiling or high on a wall and should be kept away from cooking appliances to reduce nuisance alarms. Follow the manufacturer’s distance and mounting instructions for the exact model.
Interconnect when possible
NFPA recommends interconnected alarms so a unit that detects smoke can sound the rest of the household system. Compatibility and wiring must be considered when replacing units.
