Missing or disconnected power
A removed battery, open battery drawer or disconnected hardwired unit cannot provide the intended warning. Never disable an alarm to solve a nuisance condition.
Age and end of life
Smoke alarm sensors age. Replace smoke alarms at ten years even when the indicator light is on and the test button still produces sound.
Contamination or damage
Paint, heavy dust, renovation debris, insects, water damage and physical damage can interfere with operation. Follow manufacturer cleaning instructions and replace damaged units.
Placement and coverage gaps
An operating alarm cannot warn effectively if the home lacks coverage near sleeping occupants or on a level where smoke begins. Inventory the whole layout and interconnect compatible alarms when possible.
