Confirm alarm coverage

Smoke alarms belong inside bedrooms, outside sleeping areas and on every level, including the basement. Test them monthly and replace smoke alarms at ten years.

Plan two ways out

Identify two ways out of each room when possible, choose an outside meeting place and practice the plan with everyone who lives in the home. Once outside, stay outside.

Reduce everyday ignition risks

Stay with cooking, keep combustibles away from heat sources and use heating and electrical equipment according to instructions. Do not use an alarm as a substitute for preventing fires.

Make the plan work for everyone

Children, older adults, pets and people who are deaf or hard of hearing may require specific alarm devices or assistance. Build those needs into the plan before an emergency.
