Test at least monthly
NFPA and CPSC guidance recommends using the test button at least once a month. Tell everyone in the home before the test and make sure they recognize the alarm sound.
Test the whole set
Do not stop after the easiest alarm. Include bedrooms, hallways, every level, the basement and all CO alarms. For interconnected systems, confirm the expected household response.
Record failures and dates
A paper checklist or phone note can track the test date, alarm location, manufacture date and any chirp or fault. A record makes recurring problems easier to identify.
Know when monthly testing is not enough
Test after replacing a battery, after returning a unit to its mounting ring and after any manufacturer-directed maintenance. Replace smoke alarms at ten years and CO alarms according to their model instructions.
