Spring and fall check

Walk the complete detector set, look for damage or chirps and verify the date labels. Replace standard batteries on the schedule recommended for the alarm; sealed ten-year backups are not opened for routine battery changes.

Monthly still means monthly

Use the test button at least once each month. Seasonal reminders are best used for deeper inventory tasks such as reading dates, cleaning as directed and reviewing the escape plan.

Cold-weather CO awareness

Fuel-burning equipment and closed-up homes make carbon monoxide awareness especially important in colder months. Keep generators outdoors and follow CPSC safety guidance for heating equipment.

Schedule the ladder work

If alarms are high, numerous or difficult to identify, the seasonal check is a sensible time to schedule Detector Inspectors before a late-night chirp forces the issue.
