The monthly test
National fire-safety guidance recommends testing alarms at least monthly with the test button. Everyone in the home should recognize the alarm sound and know the outside meeting place. Testing is maintenance, not a simulation of an emergency response.
What a household-wide check reveals
A full pass can reveal a basement without coverage, a bedroom missing an alarm, mixed-age units, a disconnected backup battery or a carbon monoxide alarm that has passed the manufacturer’s replacement date. The value is the inventory, not just hearing one beep.
What testing cannot promise
A passing test is a snapshot, not a lifetime guarantee. Alarms still need ongoing monthly checks and replacement at the end of their service life. If an alarm sounds outside a planned test, treat the warning as real and follow the device and emergency guidance.
